All Stedham Electronics capacitive sensors incorporate a compensation electrode.  This electrode creates a small sensing field designed to detect only the contamination on the sensor face.  As contamination increases, so does the threshold for switching.  This is not a failsafe system, and very large amounts of contamination may cause false switching.
